The Eads High School Knowledge Bowl team wrapped up the Matchwits season when team members traveled to Pueblo for the final day of competition. The 36-team field had been narrowed to the top four teams, and the semi-final matches were scheduled to be followed by the finals. The Eads team of Charlie Philpy, Cardon Brandt, Chandni Merchant, and Tyler Fox faced stiff competition from a team from Rampart, a 5A school in Colorado Springs and the eventual Matchwits champions.
The Eads team did not fare well in the semifinals. Rampart took the lead during the first round of toss-up questions, and the Eads team never gained on them. The category selections in the speed round were Rivers, Authors, and Famous Sayings. The Eads group selected rivers, which turned out to be a mistake. The questions were very difficult and involved a number of rivers that the team members had never heard of. The Rampart team chose Authors and successfully answered seven of the questions. In the final head-to-head round, neither team answered many of the difficult questions, but Rampart got four answers to the one question correctly answered by Eads.
The Matchwits season is now over, but the Eads team consisted entirely of juniors, so they will be back next year. The competitions taped this fall will be on the air on Rocky Mountain PBS next semester. The round two match against Cotopaxi will be shown on January 20 at 4:00, the quarter final round against Edison will air on February 17 at 4:30, and the semifinal competition will be on TV on March 30 at 4:00.
