The Eads High School Knowledge Bowl team traveled to Pueblo to participate in the third round of the televised Matchwits competition. The Eads team had defeated Cotopaxi in the second round to earn the right to face Edison in this quarter final match.
Eads team members were Charlie Philpy, Cardon Brandt, Chandni Merchant, and Tyler Fox. Philpy, Brandt, and Merchant competed in the first two rounds against the Edison Eagles. Toss-up questions covering a variety of subjects were asked in the first round. The team member who hit the buzzer first had six seconds in which he or she could answer the question. If that answer was incorrect, the other team was given the opportunity to respond. By the end of the round, Eads was ahead by two questions, which correlated into 20 points.
The second round was a speed round in which each team had 100 seconds to answer as many questions as possible. Since Edison was trailing, they got to select their category first. The options were Shakespeare, History, and Assortment. Edison picked History and at the end of their 100 seconds, they had raised their score by ten points. The Eads team members selected Assortment and correctly answered six questions, which raised their score to 110. The questions covered a wide variety of subjects.
Fox traded places with Merchant for the final head-to-head round. In this round, team members competed one-on-one against individual team members from Edison. At the end of the third round, the score stood Eads 140:Edison 60.
The win qualified the Eads team for the semi-final round. The team will be facing the 5A Rampart Rams from Colorado Springs. Of the 36 schools that started the competition, Eads is the sole surviving 1A school.
