The Eads Knowledge Bowl team ventured into new territory when team members participated in the televised Matchwits program. The team traveled to the PBS station at CSU Pueblo to compete against the team from Wiley. The Eads team members were Charlie Philpy, Cardon Brandt, Chandni Merchant and Tyler Fox. Despite the TV cameras and lights, the team members competed well and won the match. The Eads team took the lead during the first round and never looked back.
The Matchwits format is slightly different than a knowledge bowl meet. In the first round, the host gave toss-up questions and the contestant who buzzed in first answered. The second round was a speed round in which the team members worked together to answer a series of questions within 100 seconds. The Wiley team got to select the category first and chose Math. That left the categories of Grammar or What? for the Eads team. The team selected the What? category in which the questions covered a variety of subjects. During the third round, team members competed head-to-head with members from the Wiley team. Again, the questions were on various subjects.
The Eads team will compete against Cotopaxi on October 31. The televised showing of the first match will air on Rocky Mountain PBS (Pueblo) on November 11 at 4:00 p.m.
