Eads Knowledge Bowl

The Eads High School Knowledge Bowl team hosted its 28th annual tournament on January 18, 2008.  Thirty teams from twelve schools participated in the meet.  Kiowa County was well represented with five teams, three from Eads and two from Plainview.  The Eads "A" team of Chandni Merchant, Tyler Fox, Charlie Philpy and Cardon Brandt was among the leaders after the written round.  They held on to finish third in the meet.

The Eads Gold "B" team just missed earning a trophy when they came in fourth in the "B" team division.  Team members were Remington Brandt, Jennifer Negley, Jake Fox, Levi Hallman and Bailey King.  The Eads Purple "B" team of Tara Spady, Lisa Miller, Cory Adamson and Doug Weirich also competed in the meet.

Matchwits Semifinals

The Eads High School Knowledge Bowl team wrapped up the Matchwits season when team members traveled to Pueblo for the final day of competition.  The 36-team field had been narrowed to the top four teams, and the semi-final matches were scheduled to be followed by the finals.  The Eads team of Charlie Philpy, Cardon Brandt, Chandni Merchant, and Tyler Fox faced stiff competition from a team from Rampart, a 5A school in Colorado Springs and the eventual Matchwits champions.

The Eads team did not fare well in the semifinals.  Rampart took the lead during the first round of toss-up questions, and the Eads team never gained on them.  The category selections in the speed round were Rivers, Authors, and Famous Sayings.  The Eads group selected rivers, which turned out to be a mistake.  The questions were very difficult and involved a number of rivers that the team members had never heard of.  The Rampart team chose Authors and successfully answered seven of the questions.  In the final head-to-head round, neither team answered many of the difficult questions, but Rampart got four answers to the one question correctly answered by Eads.

The Matchwits season is now over, but the Eads team consisted entirely of juniors, so they will be back next year.  The competitions taped this fall will be on the air on Rocky Mountain PBS next semester.  The round two match against Cotopaxi will be shown on January 20 at 4:00, the quarter final round against Edison will air on February 17 at 4:30, and the semifinal competition will be on TV on March 30 at 4:00.

Matchwits Quarter Finals

The Eads High School Knowledge Bowl team traveled to Pueblo to participate in the third round of the televised Matchwits competition.  The Eads team had defeated Cotopaxi in the second round to earn the right to face Edison in this quarter final match.

Eads team members were Charlie Philpy, Cardon Brandt, Chandni Merchant, and Tyler Fox.  Philpy, Brandt, and Merchant competed in the first two rounds against the Edison Eagles.  Toss-up questions covering a variety of subjects were asked in the first round.  The team member who hit the buzzer first had six seconds in which he or she could answer the question.  If that answer was incorrect, the other team was given the opportunity to respond.  By the end of the round, Eads was ahead by two questions, which correlated into 20 points.

The second round was a speed round in which each team had 100 seconds to answer as many questions as possible.  Since Edison was trailing, they got to select their category first.  The options were Shakespeare, History, and Assortment.  Edison picked History and at the end of their 100 seconds, they had raised their score by ten points.  The Eads team members selected Assortment and correctly answered six questions, which raised their score to 110.  The questions covered a wide variety of subjects.

Fox traded places with Merchant for the final head-to-head round.  In this round, team members competed one-on-one against individual team members from Edison.  At the end of the third round, the score stood Eads 140:Edison 60.

The win qualified the Eads team for the semi-final round.  The team will be facing the 5A Rampart Rams from Colorado Springs.  Of the 36 schools that started the competition, Eads is the sole surviving 1A school.

Cheraw Knowledge Bowl

The Eads "A" team finished second at the Cheraw Knowledge Bowl.  Team members Tyler Fox, Chandni Merchant, Cardon Brandt, and Charlie Philpy scored 54 points to take second behind a team from LaJunta.  The two Eads "B" teams finished close together, with the team of Cory Adamson, Jake Fox, Jennifer Negley, and Remington Brandt taking seventh place in the "B" team competition with 32 points.  The other "B" team was right behind them with a total of 29 points.  The members on that team were Bailey King, Tara Spady, Levi Hallman, Lisa Miller, and Doug Weirich.

LCC Knowledge Bowl

The Eads High School Knowledge Bowl team brought home the traveling trophy from the Lamar Community College meet for the first time since the trophy was initiated in 1982.  “A” team members Chandni Merchant, Tyler Fox, Charlie Philpy and Cardon Brandt held off a comeback attempt by the Lamar team in the final round to win the meet.  Lamar closed to within a few points, but the Eads team rattled off five consecutive correct answers and stopped Lamar’s run.

Eads had enough team members to field two “B” teams at the LCC meet.  The members of one team were Cory Adamson, Doug Weirich, Jennifer Negley, Remington Brandt, and Jake Fox .  The other team consisted of Lisa Miller, Tara Spady, Levi Hallman and Bailey King. The two teams were very evenly matched and wound up in a tie for fourth place in the “B” team competition.

Matchwits Round 2

The Eads Knowledge Bowl team traveled to CSU Pueblo on Halloween for the second round of the televised Matchwits competition.  Team members Cardon Brandt, Tyler Fox and Charlie Philpy competed under the lights and cameras at the television station and came home with a win.

The team was pitted against Cotopaxi for this round of competition.  The match was close from start to finish and was a nail-biter for all the spectators.  Each question was worth 10 points, and the score was tied after the first round of toss-up questions.  The Eads team was the first to select the category for the second round.  The choices were Cities, On Time, and War.  The Eads boys selected Cities and proceeded to answer as many questions as they could in 100 seconds.  They scored 50 points in that round and were in the lead by 10 points after Cotopaxi finished with the On Time questions.  The third round consisted of head-to-head competition against individual Cotopaxi team members.  Neither team answered many of the difficult questions, but the Eads team held onto its slim lead.  The final score was Eads 110:Cotopaxi 100.

The Eads team will now compete in the quarter finals against Edison.  The televised showing of the first match against Wiley will air on Rocky Mountain PBS at 4:00 on November 11.  The second round will be shown on January 20.

Holly Knowledge Bowl

Nine members of the knowledge bowl team traveled to Holly for the Holly Invitational meet.  "A" team members were Charlie Philpy, Cardon Brandt, Lisa Miller, Tara Spady and Cory Adamson.  The team finished in a tie for third place with Wiley, but won the trophy because the Eads team had a higher written round score.

The "B" team finished sixth in the "B" division.  Doug Weirich, Jake Fox, Remington Brandt and Bailey King were on that team.

Matchwits

The Eads Knowledge Bowl team ventured into new territory when team  members participated in the televised Matchwits program.  The team traveled to the PBS station at CSU Pueblo to compete against the team from Wiley.  The Eads team members were Charlie Philpy, Cardon Brandt, Chandni Merchant and Tyler Fox.  Despite the TV cameras and lights, the team members competed well and won the match.  The Eads team took the lead during the first round and never looked back.

The Matchwits format is slightly different than a knowledge bowl meet.  In the first round, the host gave toss-up questions and the contestant who buzzed in first answered.  The second round was a speed round in which the team members worked together to answer a series of questions within 100 seconds.  The Wiley team got to select the category first and chose Math.  That left the categories of Grammar or What? for the Eads team.  The team selected the What? category in which the questions covered a variety of subjects.  During the third round, team  members competed head-to-head with members from the Wiley team.  Again, the questions were on various subjects.

The Eads team will compete against Cotopaxi on October 31.  The televised showing of the first match will air on Rocky Mountain PBS (Pueblo) on November 11 at 4:00 p.m.

Swink Knowledge Bowl

The Eads High School Knowledge Bowl A team took top honors at the Swink High School Knowledge Bowl on October 8.  The A team members were Chandni Merchant, Cardon Brandt, Charlie Philpy and Tyler Fox.  There were 18 A teams in the competition and Eads edged out McClave by two points to win.

The B team finished sixth out of 15 teams.  The team was in the running for third place for much of the meet, but didn't earn quite enough points in the final round to bring home any hardware.  Bailey King, Charlotte Miller, Jennifer Negley, Remington Brandt and Levi Hallman competed on the B team.

Plainview Knowledge Bowl

The knowledge bowl team opened the season at Plainview on October 5, 2007.  The A team was in the top room for most of the meet and finished in a three-way tie for third place.  The tie-breaking criteria was the written round score and Karval edged Eads out for third.  The A team members were Charlie Philpy, Cardon Brandt, Chandni Merchant and Tyler Fox.

The B team members ended up on one big team instead of on two separate teams, as had been planned.  The B team members were Cory Adamson, Lisa Miller, Tara Spady, Doug Weirich, Jake Fox, Remington Brandt and Bailey King.  They finished the meet in ninth place.
