Get a Natural High

Thanks to the S.T.A.N.D. club for giving us the opportunity to watch the video called NATURAL HIGH.  I thought the message was quite clear and to the point:  When you say NO to drugs you are saying YES to success and a great life....no easier way to put it.  It has become NOT-COOL to do drugs these days because people are more and more getting into that Natural High.
Naturalhigh

Go to the naturalhigh.org website where you can see what other teens and young adults have to say about getting a natural buzz.  At that site you can even win prize money and scholarships by contributing your ideas to the site...an awesome way for anyone to show their commitment to a natural lifestyle away from toxic drugs.....and get a little reward back at the same time.

So, what do you do to get a natural high?  Go to the website and write it down...it just might get you $5,000 in scholarship money!

COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO STAPH

The MRSA staph bacteria was on the news all day yesterday and in light of our recent tragic experience with this very same "supervirus" I felt that it might be helpful to remind all of us about the facts on MRSA.  These facts were relayed to all of us during our tragic loss of a student and now we are seeing a replay of sorts on the national news as people in Virginia deal with the same tragedy we are experiencing.

I do not think, however, that there is any need to panic or blow this situation out of perspective.  We need to continue to follow the exact same precautions we were told originally,...precautions that are common-sense and should be practiced daily by every one of us.  Those include:

1.  Washing hands often with soap and warm water

2.  Washing any wounds or sores and keep them covered

3.  Never use other people's "stuff" including sports equipment, towels, brushes, etc...

4.  Keep surfaces clean ... using bleach and Lysol is very effective

If you are still concerned or have questions please contact our health professionals ... they have been very helpful and willing to assist during this unsettling time.

TO BE AN EAGLE....

A middle school student from Eads wrote the following piece in Ms. Boyd's English class and I believe it captures the essence of who we are:

As I walked the halls, lined with trophies and awards, I was filled with pride.  The thought how all these champions through the years sacrificed to be an Eagle sent chills up my spine. They worked their hardest to be the best and soar above all the rest.  I know to decorate these halls with gold balls and plaques each and every Eagle had to give everything.  To be an Eagle and fly is a great priviledge and when I step out of these doors for the last time I will never forget I got to be an Eagle.

What does it mean to be an Eagle to you?....

INTERPRETATIONS OF SAND CREEK: How Should The Story Best Be Told?

The National Park Service is now collecting proposals on how to go about developing the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site.  I received a letter asking for my input on this topic and thought I would really like to know what our school community thinks about how we should tell the story of Sand Creek.  How do you think the park should look?  How should it operate?  What should be out there for people to see?  How should the Town of Eads and National Park Service set up the tours for visitors? There is a lot of work ahead of us...it is time to get our crystal balls out and tell our future...

Sand_creek_camp This picture is of the tee pees that were in camp on Saturday.  To me this was interesting.  Could a permanent replica encampment be part of the overall plans for this historic site?  What are the considerations for the Native American communities?

REFLECTIONS ON SAND CREEK

Nighthorse_campbell_sand_cr_2 I think it is very important that we take a couple of moments to reflect as a school community on what our impressions and perspectives were on Sand Creek.  Tell what you noticed this weekend, what you liked or disliked, what you think this means to our community.  I add a photo of Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell because I certainly enjoyed his speech on the story of Sand Creek.

Is it an HONOR to be on the Honor Roll?

What is your opinion on our current HONOR ROLL system?  It seems that there is a large percentage of students on the Honor Roll each quarter/semester and I wonder if you think it has become less than an HONOR to be on the Honor Roll....Currently, you're on the A Honor Roll if your grades average to be a 93-100% and you don't have a C reported.  You're on the B Honor Roll if your grades average from a 85-92% and don't have a D reported. Does our system currently have high enough standards or should we raise the bar?  If we do raise the bar...what kind of system would you like to see?

School Accountability Report: Just How Good Are We?

The State of Colorado has sent out the "Report Cards" for all schools in the state.  These reports grade schools on CSAP scores, graduation rates, discipline rates, and financial stability.  Overall, we look pretty good....with a HIGH rating (about a B+).....BUT, is that good enough?  Nope....good.....but not GOOD ENOUGH!

What do you think?  List some ideas about how you think we can get to that EXCELLENT rating???

(By the way, go to the school report on our website and see what schools...if any...scored better than us)

Is It a MySpace Issue or a Censorship Issue....Or Both?

Myspace The School's Acceptable Use Policy that you signed indicates students agree they will not access certain social networking sites.  In addition, these sites are filtered by the school's IT department.  But despite policies and filters, many students have decided to ignore all that and find a way to cheat the system that has been put in place for the protection of the students and the protection of the school's very expensive equipment.  Why?  What is the motivation behind cheating by getting onto proxy servers, that, by the way, devastate a school's network by opening up unsecure tunnels for hackers to have their way with the school's information, in order to get to MySpace or Facebook or a hundred other social networking sites?  Why do you have to be on MySpace or other social networking sites during school time and on school computers?  Does MySpace/Facebook have any educational value whatsoever?  And for that matter....Why does the school use filters? Is it Censorship?  Why or why not?

The Road to Failure

00912161

Since many of you are learning to drive right now and the rest of us have been down many roads already, I thought I might warn you about a wrong turn that is pretty easy to take.  It's called the Road to Failure and once you're on that road you'll soon figure out where you are if you notice such "scenery" as Fear, or Blame, or Pouting, or, worst of all, Denial

If that type of "scenery" has been in your view lately, you might want to think about taking a new road.  But how do you exit the Road to Failure and find the Road to Success?  What "exits" should you be looking for and how do you make sure you take those exits?

It's how you deal with failure that determines how you achieve success.  So, how do you deal?
